HackathonGirls is the Gambia’s largest technology program for girls/women. We hope to run across countries in Africa, supported by our partners and sponsors (see our partners page)..

Through HackathonGirls work with women mentors, working together to develop skills, train girls, find a problem in our community, and develop a project to solve these problems.

We have been running HackathonGirls for 2 years. In that, 100 girls around the Gambia have developed computer basics skills and coding skills.

TYPES OF PROJECTS GIRLS DEVELOP

Three of our girls from the Mozilla Club of HackathonGirls ages 15 and 18 were selected to represent the continent of Africa at the FIRST Global Challenge 2018 International Robotics Competition in Mexico in August 2018, Amie Sankareh, Vanessa Williams and Ida Camara.

They were selected as the best three girls from the age of 15 to 18 doing well in the club to go for it. The 2018 FIRST Global Challenge centered around the theme of “Energy Impact”. The girls built a ROBOT that will help to generate energy from different sources. From commonly used fossil fuels to environmentally-friendly resources like solar and wind, energy is a tool that powers the different parts of our world one way or another.

Django Girls which is a one day workshop for women to develop websites with HTML, CSS, Django and Python. 25 women developed a website during this workshop and ongoing mentorship after the one day.

Reach out to us if you need a website and our girls can help out. We believe the IT industry will greatly benefit from bringing more women into technology. We want to give girls an opportunity to learn how to program and become one of us – women programmers! This awesome website we also worked on. Read more here Django Girls Banjul
